The Matinee February 19th includes something for everyone today including awesome indie rock, blistering rock, stellar synth pop and a tinge of shoegaze. Artists today represent Australia, The UK, and the US. Check back tomorrow for more single choices and Sunday for our weekend compilation of all tracks covered this week.
Beauty Sleep – “The Dark” (Belfast, UK)
The beginning riff of “The Dark” reminds a bit of recent Phoenix. The track immediately reels you in, then grabs ahold and doesn’t let go.
The dreamy vocals and chilled out beats will be perfect for upcoming warmer weather playlists.
“The Dark” is Beauty Sleep’s debut track and we can’t wait to hear more this year from this talented trio.
Beauty Sleep are Ryan McGroarty, Cheylene Murphy, and Aimee Williamson.
DZ Deathrays – “Blood On My Leather” (Brisbane, Australia)
DZ Deathrays have been one to keep tabs on ever since checking them out in Austin at SXSW in 2013.
The blistering rock duo are back with a new single titled “Blood On My Leather”. The track is a punch in the face of heart pounding rock. As usually, the duo create a massive energetic sound.
If the duo are still making it to SXSW next month (they are on the list, but no showcase confirmed yet), they are definitely ones to witness live.
Their newest single is available now via I Oh You Party. DZ Deathrays are Shane Parson and Simon Ridley.
Goldensuns – “Give It Up” (Los Angeles, USA)
“Give it Up” follows the release of the band’s debut single “I Feel This Place” which has been well received online and in the music blogosphere.
“Give it Up” has an awesome mix of retro surf rock and just the right amount of reverb to satisfy any fan with a shoegaze appetite.
Goldensuns are originally from Salt Lake City, UT but have since relocated to Los Angeles.
The trio is comprised of brothers Chase (bass/lead singer), Jantzen (guitar/vocals) and Weston Meier (drums/vocals). “Give It Up” is from their forthcoming EP which should be released later this spring.
LANKS – “Golden Age” (Melbourne, Australia)
LANKS is Will Cuming and he is creating awesome tunes as of late. “Golden Age” is filled with awesome world beats, energizing synth set against Cuming’s soaring vocals.
Cuming’s vocals are easily in the same category as amazing falsetto artists like Thom Yorke or even Jeff Buckley.
Cuming studied jazz guitar at the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts before immersing himself in hook-driven electronic and pop music.
“Golden Age” is the newest track from this talented Australian multi-instrumentalist. If you are just noe discovering LANKS, his EP from last year titled Banquet will tide you over until we hear more new music later this year.
Larkins – “Let Your Hair Down” (Manchester, UK)
“Let Your Hair Down” is an awesome new track from UK based Larkins. Their band namesake is taken from poet Philip Larkin.
The UK rock band is perfecting the construction of simple guitar riffs layered with intricate solo pieces. “Let Your Hair Down” is set against meaningful lyrics and strong vocals to provide an awesome indie rock track worth being added to your newest indie playlist.
The track is from the quartet’s debut EP, Don’t Leave The Light On, which is out now. Larkins are Josh Noble, Dom Want, Matt Williams, and Henry Beach.
TUFT – “Stills” (Los Angeles, USA)
“Stills” is the newest track from LA Based TUFT. The single is the first off of their upcoming debut album.
The trio is creating complex layers against memorable vocals that remind a tad of Jim James. “Stills” is at times anthemic, expansive and also a bit segmented in parts, but it totally works and makes TUFT the unique and talented band that they are.
TUFT’s debut album LOOK LOOK is expected April 8. Check out their social media pages for details as they come. The trio have an upcoming tour, and will be one I have to look out for at SXSW this year.
TUFT is Casey Trela, Kevin Manwarren and Roxy Radulescu.
